Blocked drains: simple checks before calling a plumber

A slow or blocked drain is frustrating, but a few safe checks can sometimes identify the problem.

Check the trap and plughole

Remove visible hair, food or debris and clean the plughole. If the blockage is beneath a sink, place a bowl underneath before inspecting the trap.

Avoid harsh chemical experiments

Drain chemicals can damage some fittings and create a hazard for anyone who later needs to work on the pipework. If the blockage remains, stop and call a professional.

When to call TPS

Call us if several fixtures are affected, water is backing up, there is a foul smell or the blockage keeps returning.
