What to do when you have a burst pipe

A burst pipe can cause serious damage quickly. These first steps can help you reduce the impact while you arrange professional help.

1. Turn off the water

Find your internal stop tap and turn it clockwise. If you cannot find it, check under the kitchen sink, near the boiler or where the mains water enters the property.

2. Switch off nearby electricity

If water is close to electrical sockets, appliances or the consumer unit, keep clear and arrange for the electricity to be isolated safely.

3. Contain the water

Use buckets, towels and containers to limit spread. Move furniture and valuables away from the affected area where it is safe to do so.

4. Call TPS
